about
Jonathan Butler, a South African singer-songwriter who grew up under the shadow of apartheid and was raised in poverty, has endured systemic racism and social injustice, spending his young adulthood and career being a voice for change in his country. Written in response to the murder of George Floyd, "Our Voices Matter" speaks to the public as a call to action against racial injustice and to encourage people to use their voices to make change in a peaceful, orderly manner, starting by exercising their right to vote.
lyrics
Some people’s lights have all been dimmed
Sit there and take it all in
Depleted, deleted
I say I am because you are
And we are all of us scarred
Not defeated, repleted
Stop that noise in our minds
Walk the divides
Our footprints merged underneath
As we sing
Our voices matter, voices matter
What matters to you, it matters to me
Our voices matter, they matter
We’re all part of this great melody
Like tone and time
Our souls aligned
Always waiting to leave
We’re always waiting to breathe
Unknowing, but I’m hoping
If we can go with the strides
We’ve made not just taking sides
Consoling, love flowing
The sirens blaze in our heads
While we look to the ground
But if we, if we look within
We won’t go without in this house
Our voices matter, voices matter
What matters to you, it matters to me
Our voices matter, they matter
We’re all part of this great melody
Like tone and time
Our souls aligned
I’ll lean into discomfort
Yeah, we are all in this moment
Our voices matter, they matter
What matters to you, it matters to me
Our choices matter, they matter
The words that we sing and we speak
Like tone and time
Our souls, souls aligned
Our voices matter, voices matter, they matter
What matters to you, it matters to me
Our voices matter, they matter
We’re all parts of this great melody
Like tone and time
Our souls aligned

GRAMMY®-nominated singer-songwriter/guitarist Jonathan Butler was born in South Africa under the shadow of apartheid and
raised in poverty. While still a teenager, his first single broke down racial barriers, becoming the first song by a non-white artist to be played on South African radio. He went on to earn multiple GRAMMY nominations and recognition for his music and his humanitarian work....more
